ERODED LIGHT
PLASTER / LAMP / 2020BY ARTHUR HAINZ
ERODED LIGHT is a collaborative project with designer GAURAV JHANGIANI, a demonstration of a dynamic casting technique devised, developed and finally demonstrated in the form of a lighting implement. The basic technique is based around two casting mediums possessing similar viscosities yet differing curing times.
Sample_1, light swirl
Sample_2, vertical mix
Sample_3, layered pour
By hand pouring equal parts clay slip and plaster simultaneously, the near identical consistencies allow the plaster to be suspended in forms otherwise unachievable. After then allowing for the plaster to cure, the slip is removed and recycled, leaving remarkable geographical structures, reminiscent of cliff faces sculpted by thousands of years of erosion. Featuring caverns and crevices, this artificial landscape is best showcased under direct light, its depth and complexity highlighted by long shadows and bright ridge faces.
Cross section of samples
The basic technique allows for infinite unique variations to be made. Both gently swirling and mixing the clay and plaster with different motions or tools and pouring the two in different patterns allow for vastly different structures and textures to be achieved.
